PvdM Dutch Climate Policy on the way:

Climate change is one of the major global challenges of our civilized-time. It necessitates innovative national, EU-European and UN-global policy and closer international cooperation than ever before. Several reviews conclude that the risks and costs of doing nothing are so high, at both national and international level, that it cannot be regarded as a serious option.

Action is necessary in the short term in order to avert potentially serious consequences in the longer term for our mankind.

The recent report of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) underscores the need for urgent action, and emphasizes that an effective response to climate change is technically and financially feasible. The message from science is clear and convincing.

Most of the government recognizes the urgency and scale of the global climate challenge. That is why we are pursuing a 30% reduction in our greenhouse gas emissions by 2020, relative to 1990, preferably as part of a EU European effort. The sense of urgency is also felt in the rest of Europe. In the spring of 2007, the EU Council made a historic decision to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the EU by at least 20% by 2020 relative to 1990 levels.

The Council also endorsed a commitment to reduce emissions by 30%, as part of a comprehensive, global climate agreement beyond 2012, provided other developed countries adopt comparable reductions and economically more advanced developing countries like USA & Japan also contribute. If not I am afraid our mankind is in stake in this splendid Green-Globe!
