Naogaon
Naogaon District (Rajshahi division) with an area of 3435.67 sq km, is bounded by West Bengal of India on the north, natore and rajshahi districts on the south, joypurhat and bogra districts on the east, nawabganj district and West Bengal (India) on the west. Annual temperature: maximum 37.8°C and minimum 11.2°C; annual rainfall 1862 mm. Main rivers are atrai, punarbhaba, little jamuna, nagar, Chiri and Tulsi Ganga. Guta, Mansur and Dighali beels are notable.
Naogaon (Town) a municipal town, has an area of 37.03 sq km. It consists of 9 wards and 62 mahallas. The town has a population of 123101; male 51.78%, female 48.22%; literacy rate among the town people is 48.5%. It has one dakbungalow and one rest house.
Administration Naogaon subdivision, under Rajshahi district, was established in 1877 and was turned into a district in 1984. It consists of 2 municipality, 11 upazilas, 18 wards, 74 mahallas, 99 union parishads and 2795 villages. The upazilas are naogaon sadar, atrai, badalgachhi, dhamoirhat, manda, mahadevpur, niamatpur, patnitala, porsha, raninagar and sapahar.

Under "main rivers", it has been written above that "little jamuna" is one of the main rivers of Naogaon District. Isn't this a wrong information? The name of the river flowing through Naogaon Town has always been "Jamuna" and not "Little Jamuna" (ছোট যমুনা). May be the name "ছোট যমুনা" ("Little Jamuna") been derived from the comparison between the river flowing through Naogaon District and the one across which Jamuna Bridge has been built. The jamuna River flowing through Naogaon District is much older than the one which is thought to be "বড় যমুনা" (Big Jamuna).
Do we know that two hundred years back the "Big Jamuna" was not there? The "Big Januma" is the creation of a devastating earthquake that had struck Bengal and Assam in the 19th century. Prior to that earthquake, Barahmaputra River used to flow into the Meghna River near Bhairab Bazar following the course that is now termed as "Old Brahmaputra". The earthquake of 19th century had formed the present channel that has been named as Jamuna River connecting Brahmaputra (near Bahadurabad) and Padma (near Aricha). We should not rename any geographical feature like rivers, lakes, hills, wetlands, etc. Also, renaming a river to distinguish it from other river(s) with same name should not be done. There is another river in India with the same name, which is also famous. Taj Mahal -- the symbol of eternal love was built by Emperor Shahjahan on the bank of Jamuna (Yamuna) River. Let our Jamuna River be called by its age old name Jamuna only and not "Little Jamuna". |
